Special guest post from Samantha Reed of Reed’s Reads and Reviews, a young adult book blog centered mostly around reviewing upcoming and other favorite titles. Thanks Samantha!
I’m sure every single one of us young adult book lovers has read a book and then hoped it would someday be turned into a film – even if it was a crappy one. There is something magical about seeing things you picture so vividly brought to life on the big screen, or even on the television (I’m nodding at you, Shadowhunters). But, we also know that not every amazing book we find will get the chance to branch out and become something more. Here are some of my most wanted adaptations that have yet to happen (or already happened and were so horrendous it deserves a makeover).
This young adult series is just so damn magical I can’t believe no one has touched it yet. I mean, it’s basically every child’s dream come true – only it turned into a nightmare. Filled with faeries, trolls, evil-bitch queens, family drama, and romance that will make your toes curl, The Iron Fey series is by far one of my all-time favorites. If this were ever made into a movie, I would hope for something Lord of the Rings-esqu with four hour films. Well, either that or something all-encompassing like HBO’s rendition Game of Thrones. It’s just that good.
This is one book series that was made to be the perfect television show. Yet another one of my all-time favorites, Morganville Vampires is more than just your average vampire story. This time, the vamps are the bad guys – and, boy, are they scary. Not to mention the fact that the protagonist is completely relatable, adorable, and every adjective in-between.
This is one of those ones that already has a movie, but that film was cringe worthy. This book deserves special attention to detail – which it didn’t get previously. I would love to see this turned into an HBO or Starz show; it’s got the content for it. Plus, Rose is a complete badass – that’s all.
Um, hello to the most obviously needed SciFi show in existence. Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White walk into a space bar….? Just kidding, they don’t walk into a space bar – they completely rule the universe. One: If you haven’t read these yet, what are you doing with your life? Two: HOW IS THIS NOT ALREADY A THING! Someone has some serious explaining to do – before I sick Wolfe on them.
While some of my other young adult mentions have been better suited for a television show because of how expansive and ridiculous the storylines are, The Grisha Trilogy is much better suited for a good old film franchise. The Darkling, Mal, Alina, and Nikolai were made to shine brightly on the big screen.
This might be a bit strange, but this book would make the best original Hallmark or ABC Family film (Yes, I know it is now Freeform. No, I will not acknowledge its legitimacy.) This book is so, so sweet. Honestly, Jack is one of my favorite book boyfriends ever – and that’s saying something. This book is quirky, hilarious, adorable, and absolutely perfect.
This is one of the lesser known gems out there. The Elemental Series is by far one of the best family centered, supernatural series I’ve ever read. Not only that, but the descriptions and explanations are absolutely phenomenal. I think this would make an excellent television show. With six books total and two novellas, there is plenty of material and amazing characters to work with. GET WITH THE PROGRAM PEOPLE.
This is, hands down, one of the best young adult trilogies I have ever read. It is non-stereotypical, self-aware, original, and utterly compelling and heartbreaking. This would be another great movie franchise in the making. I can picture it now… Brynn… Callum… wolves up the ying yang and pack politics that will make your brain hurt but ache for more. Yupp, I can see it, can’t you?
The first ongoing series mentioned in this bunch of books, Undertow would completely blow your minds as a film – it already does a book. When I read it for the first time last year, I couldn’t believe it – I still can’t. This is probably one of the most original interpretations of the word “alien” I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading, watching, etc. This would make a great film, I can already imagine the CGI and all the water and gloriousness and ugh…
Another book series by the goddess that is Jennifer Lynn Barnes… *gasp* oh my! The Fixer is basically everything we could ever want in a political crime drama. Though it is centered in the young adult genre, it is reminiscent of Scandal, Veronica Mars, and every other thing you can imagine – only better. Despite the fact that only the first book is currently out and about in our world, this would make one hell of a television show with all the damn suspense and problem solving and fixing of things. It is like a wild, wild storm – and it’s awesome.
Well, that’s all for now folks. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Which of your young adult favorites made, or didn’t make, the list? Which one would you be the most likely to watch and why? HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT.
