The two-part finale of iZombie made my week.
It sure has been a busy couple of weeks in TV land! I love iZombie. The end of the season was excellent! With all of my winter favourites, going on hiatus, I am the proverbial potato, giving my couch a good workout while I say goodbye to some, and hello to my new summer TV shows.
Now my recap on a most spectacular two-part finale… iZombie, entitled “Dead Beat and Salivation Army”.
Last we saw, Major (Robert Buckley) had gone zombie again and was arrested as the “Chaos Killer”, Blane (David Anders) was struggling with amnesia due to Ravi’s (Rahul Kohli) very experimental zombie cure, and our heroine, Liv was desperately trying to locate her boyfriend, after finding out that he was an undercover vice cop, infiltrating this season’s über villain, Mr. Boss’ organization.
Everyone on the same page? Great! Now let’s get to the good stuff. iZombie is known for hilarious gallows humor, incredibly clever writing, and creative albeit spicy recipes with brains being the key ingredient. Not only are they nourishing and dare I say appetizing, they also give Liv her superpower that enables her to solve crimes with partner Det. Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin). Visions from her meal…er the victim.
The finale was rife with all of the above and then some. The writing was right on the nose and despite it being very intense the underlying tones were always funny. Honestly I could do an entire article on this show alone but alas that wouldn’t be fair to my other shows now would it? I will say that some very important threads and storylines from season’s one and two were tied up very thoroughly and without the viewer having to rely on subtext. Bravo to creator Rob Thomas and team for doing such an amazing job.
Here’s what happened…
- Liv finally reveals what she is to Clive by stabbing herself in the chest, simultaneously going full on zombie…very subtle I know, and Clive takes the news very… well, Clive – like as he is not prone to big reactions. His biggest concern is to stop the impending doom that Major’s boss/ blackmailer (Vaughn) is about to unleash. If there will be relationship fall out from Liv’s revelation we won’t know till season three. At least she doesn’t have to pretend to be psychic anymore.
- The “Chaos Killer’s” victims are released from deep freeze but unfortunately Liv’s undead paramour has already turned full Romero and she has to kill him.
- Vaughn’s Max Rager misdeeds have attracted attention of military contractors and in doing business with them, ultimately brings about his own demise.
- Lastly, a new baddy arrives on the scene and tries to entice Liv to join Team Zombie and turn Seattle into a utopian society for the undead. Poor Liv, what a decision to have to make. Guess we will have to see what she does in season 3.
Like I said I could go on forever because it was that good, obviously as the CW has renewed iZombie for a third season and I don’t think this show will be going six feet under any time soon. Liv’s going to be kicking ass for a long time.
Next on the agenda is the brand spanking new Lucifer on Fox.
Next week brings the season one finale, but the show has also been renewed for another season. Not surprising because it is the hottest (pun intended) sexiest and refreshingly new crime show on the block!
Throughout season one, Lucifer Morningstar AKA The Prince of Darkness (Tom Ellis) has been enjoying his self-proclaimed vacation from Hell in sunny California (of course ). Unfortunately or fortunately depending on who’s asking, his time on earth is making him get in touch with his humanity and though he constantly tells people his job was to only punish the guilty, the rep he got and is even idolized for, is as an evil and sadistic torturer. So how does he deal with these conflicting human emotions? He goes to a shrink of course. It is LA after all, and her payment arrangements are a little unorthodox *wink wink, nudge nudge, as she can’t resist his charms.
While he’s shirking his duties, his Father with a capital F wants him back where he belongs and to get Lucifer back on the job he sends down Lucifer’s heavenly brother Angel Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) to encourage (*cough… force) him to go home.
While Mr. Morningstar is trying to enjoy his sabbatical, deal with his humanity and avoid his brother he meets the very smart and beautiful Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and despite his many charms, he is unable to get close to her which has never happened to him before.
I have to say this show is quickly becoming a favourite. It’s smart, witty and totally different from any cop show you’ve ever seen. Tom Ellis is superb as Lucifer. He oozes charisma and the camera loves him. Did I mention he’s British? If you are going to binge on any programs, Lucifer is a must see! Bonus: Tons of eye candy!
Hopefully tonight will bring more improvements and a lot more action! Catch up on Fear the Walking Dead with me.
Have a great week and stay tuned next Sunday for more on your fabulous new Rants and Raves.
