Here’s your recap of last week’s Fear the Walking Dead. It’s all you need to get psyched for tonight’s episode.
Nick (Frank Dillane) gets a tongue lashing from his mother Madison (Kim Dickens) for endangering himself when he had a tangle with a walker, or should I say swimmer under the downed sailboat. However it was not for nothing as he retrieved the log book which Travis (Cliff Curtis) reads and shockingly reveals to the survivors that San Diego has been burned to the ground. Meanwhile Strand (Coleman Domingo) is looking for a place to hide from the boat that is tailing the Abigail and suggests they go hide out near the coastline.
Travis suggests Catrina Island. It’s private, isolated and has a ranger station that could mean more supplies for them.
Surprise! They manage to avoid the mystery boat but discover a survivalist family living on the island doing their best to keep the dead that wash up on shore from having them for lunch.
The father is a survivalist in the extreme. He insists that Travis and his family may stay but his own will not be leaving the island. It’s when Nick discovers suicide pills on one of his endless searches for drugs, that they realize how serious their host really is.
Well everything goes to hell rather quickly after that. While Mrs. Survivalist is begging Madison to bring her two small children with them when they leave, the young son discovers his little sister unresponsive on the floor, suicide pills close at hand. She had seen Nick in her father’s study when he found the pills.
We know in moments the little girl’s body will reanimate but of course the mother will not leave her poor daughter’s body. At this time Mr. Survivalist agrees to let Madison and Travis take his young boy and stays with his girls just as his daughter takes a bite out of her mom.
They almost make it to the boat which Strand has readied for departure but unfortunately the eldest son refuses to let them take his little brother and while he drags the poor little guy back onto the dock Mommy dearest now a bloodied Walker is shuffling her way to her boys. Madison screams for the little boy to turn around and watch as the big boat departs while the elder son shoots his mother in the face with a rifle. Yikes!
Fear the Walking Dead has been on probation for me since season one. It has had a slow start and diehard Walking Dead fans like myself are having a hard time appreciating the naivety of these new characters. Setting them apart from Rick Grimes and the Atlanta 5 is very difficult. That being said the show is chugging along and I think gets a little better as it goes. I just remind myself that they are young and will have growing pains.
Hopefully tonight will be better. Crossing my fingers.
