Hello my fellow Dead Heads! Last night’s episode gave Eugene a starring role as friend turned enemy!?
But did he? It certainly looked like he was making himself at home in his new APARTMENT (wtf??) on Negan’s compound. However, we can’t be sure that he isn’t working some diabolical angle from the inside. Personally, I think Eugene really is assimilating but who knows for sure.
Before we get into it, I just wanted to let you know that I am shaking up the format a little. Instead of a full recap/ narrated walk-through, I would like to try something a little more conversational. If you were watching the Oscars last night and missed it, you can read a full recap here. Okay let’s do this!
Fat Joey and his Sandwich
After Daryl escaped and bashed in Fat Joey’s head, Negan’s first reaction was to go to Alexandria to find him. Well, we all know what happened there. Spencer was eviscerated and Rosita tried and failed to shoot Negan with the bullet that Eugene crafted. Eugene was taken away and brought blind-folded to The Saviors’ compound.
Last night we got to see what happened to Eugene while Rick and the gang were recruiting.
We all know that “Haircut” is not the bravest guy whoever lived but recently he has tried to step up despite ridicule from Rosita etc… He even owned up to making the bullet for Rosita (which he didn’t want to do) but making that bullet may in fact have saved his life.
Clearly, Negan and Dwight failed with Daryl so Negan decides to play “good cop” this time. He suspects Eugene may be an asset so instead of killing him he tries to win him over.
Best way to win over a geeky, weird man? Appeal to the qualities said man possessed before the apocalypse. Much to his obvious shock and disbelief, Eugene is shown to his own apartment stocked with food, a flat-screen and video games. He is also awarded an evening with some of Negan’s wives “But no sex!” he is warned.
Eugene spends an enjoyable evening trying to teach three inebriated ladies the finer points of video games and also concocts a few entertaining experiments at the ladies request. Seriously, it was like watching an episode of Myth Busters for a minute there lol.
Meanwhile, as Eugene is acclimatizing, Dwight gets a beating and is then thrown into solitary for failing to turn Daryl. Also because Sherry coincidentally left just hours later. Dwight find the little slip of paper that was slid under Daryl’s cell door and recognizes the handwriting as his wife’s. He keeps that info to himself. Once Negan is assured that Dwight is still his “man” he is tasked with finding Sherry.
Dwight and Sherry
Dwight knows exactly where to go to look for his wife and it is here where we get a glimpse into the life they had together. At their former home, Dwight searches for Sherry but finds a note instead. If ever there was a chance for them to get away, they were to meet here but Sherry chose to go at it alone. In her letter she apologizes to Dwight for turning him into the man he is now. See, she thought agreeing to being Negan’s wife would make life easier for them. Unfortunately, it made everything worse than they could have imagined. Poor Dwight! I know, I know! He has done horrible things but I can empathize right? He returns alone to the compound and tells everyone she was killed by walkers.
So has Eugene become “Negan”?
This is a hard one! He does prove his worth to Negan but overdoes the whole “genius” thing breaking out the “I was a scientist on a mission” story. Dwight sets up the compound doctor and because the doc is now expendable, Negan murders him. But why is the doctor expendable? Well because Eugene oversold his “Dr. Smarty Pants” story and now Negan thinks he has a new doctor.
After seeing the doctor brutally murdered, Eugene decides not to give the ladies the poison pills he made knowing they were for Negan and not Amber. He thought he had an opportunity to kill Negan but he was too afraid. Good thing, because it was clearly a loyalty test and he passed with flying colours. Negan even tells him, “You don’t have to be afraid anymore” and that is all Eugene has ever wanted.
So, feeling protected and needed, has Eugene gone over to the dark side? I think so but there is a slim possibility that he is biding time. After all, he now has to impersonate a medical doctor and how long can he do that?
I’d love to hear what you guys think. Until next time and thanks for reading Rants & Raves!
