After a brief break for Thanksgiving, Vampire Diaries is back with “Detoured On Some Backwoods Path To Hell” (another quote from season 1) and it was a doozy!
I am really loving season 8. I’m sure some critics would disagree but in my opinion, TVD is going out on a high note. Every episode thus far, has evoked a whole spectrum of emotions from me and Friday’s episode (S8.07) was no exception. There really is nothing Damon won’t do to keep from spending an eternity in Hell and I don’t blame him. Especially with his rap sheet.
Last we saw, Seline the other Siren had kidnapped Ric and Caroline’s tiny, but powerful twins. Not surprising then, that we pick up with our distraught parents searching frantically for their toddlers.
It turns out that Stefan is the hero of the episode when he rescues the them. But what he does in exchange for the tots? Ugh… my heart!
Seline takes refuge in a diner outside of town, little twins in tow. It doesn’t take long for Damon and Sybil to catch up with them. Damon is shocked to see the twins and Sybil and Seline have a painful reunion. After pleasantries are exchanged, Seline explains her plan to offer Cade the twins as replacements for herself and Seline. She wants to atone for a lifetime of horror and also hopes freeing them, will make up for her abandoning Sybil in the Armory 200 hundred years ago.
Sybil is skeptical and tells Seline that Cade won’t be interested. Damon on the other hand, looks a little unsettled with the idea of Ric’s kids being offered up and the wheels start turning. Is this because there are still traces of the old Damon left? Or is he just looking for an alternative to Hell. Speaking of Hell, Damon had no idea there were ways of keeping out of an eternity of fire and brimstone.
Reunited and It Feels So Good…
Until it doesn’t. Bonnie and Enzo wake up in each other’s arms, blissful to be reunited. Suddenly, Bonnie’s phone blows up and she hears about the kidnapping. While Bonnie is hearing the dreadful news, Enzo receives a shocking phone call himself. Surprised to see Damon’s name on the screen, (remember they think Damon is locked down in a coffin) he answers the phone only to have Sybil blast him with her Siren Song. These guys can’t catch a break! Once again, Sybil is in Enzo’s head but this time she only wants to torture him to death, not make him her slave. Bonnie and Enzo barely make their way over to Stefan and Matt. Bonnie begs them for help. She turns to Stefan and asks him to “Please go inside his head” and see if he can help.
Why Isn’t Stefan With Caroline?
While preparing to search for her kids, Caroline sends Stefan reeling. She tells him that he can’t come with them because “If Damon comes between her and her kids” she will kill him. Then she all but breaks up with him explaining, “That until all of this is over, it is only her kids and her kids’ father.” (Ouch Caroline! I’m a mother so I get, it but still.) She even gives him back her ring.
So left with Matt, they do whatever they can to find the twins through police channels. That is until Bonnie shows up with Enzo and Stefan takes a walk through his tortured subconscious. Stefan agrees but tells Bonnie that he’s never done more than scratch the surface. Enzo tells him, “He’s about to open some dark doors.” Stefan enters his mind and a grim but familiar tableau is laid out.
Enzo is on the operating table, gut cut open while the “doctor” plays around with his insides. He is awake, always painfully awake. (TVD fans know that for ages, Enzo was tortured and dissected daily at the hands of the Augustine Foundation) Sybil has taken the place of the surgeon. She explains to Enzo that she is punishing him for getting away. “No one gets away from me.” she says. Her psychological torment is physically killing him.
She does however give Stefan a clue as to where the twins are located.
Damon Has a Plan
Once he realizes there may be away to avoid Hell, Damon concocts a plan with Sybil that takes the twins out of the equation and perhaps gives Damon the revenge he once promised his brother. Once an Amber Alert has been broadcasted, Seline nearly gets caught by authorities several times before Damon takes over. He drives them to a seedy motel and much to Seline’s displeasure, one that possesses what’s necessary to summon Cade. She was not planning on offering the twins for another decade or so (Cause you know, that makes it better).
With the help of the twins’ siphoning powers, Seline summons Cade and we finally see Cade the Devil in the present. He is intrigued by her offer, however Damon and Sybil have a counter proposal that is much more enticing. Two supernatural brothers who have blood soaked souls. They only have to go to Cade willingly.
Deal with the Devil
Meanwhile, Stefan is still trying to find out where the twins are. Once again he makes the forray into Enzo’s mind and just before Sybil delivers the killing blow, he reveals himself to her. She tells them where they are (part of the plan) and invites him to the party. Stefan immediately gives Ric and Caroline a location but not THE location. He tells Caroline he is going to do whatever it takes to save everyone.
In frustration Ric tells Caroline that once they get their children back, he is taking them. He doesn’t think they are safe with Caroline any longer because “darkness follows vampires wherever they go.” He even goes as far to say that they are “his kids, his and Joes!” (Wow! That stings!)
Now that Sybil and Damon have a new plan in motion, she leaves Enzo alone. In a touching moment, Matt and Bonnie discuss Enzo’s virtues and he wakes up and says, “I don’t know who to kiss first.” Bonnie is elated.
Eternity of Misery
Stefan arrives at the motel only to be greeted by a bunch of wood wielding men, commanded to kill him, by Sybil. Stefan manages to take all of them down without killing except for one. Damon greets them in the hall and tells Stefan to save his own life by killing his attacker and he can then save the twins.
The price for saving the twins and returning them to their mother? Indebted servitude to Cade for all time. Essentially, Damon and Stefan voluntarily take Sybil and Seline’s place.
Later, Stefan will tell Caroline that he promised her he would do whatever it took to get her kids back and Damon finally delivered on his promise to make Stefan suffer an eternity of misery. A heartbroken Caroline says, “You promised me a June wedding!” and Stefan tells her his last condition for the deal was to have 24 hrs to spend free with her. (Sniff) Then he must spend the rest of eternity collecting evil souls for Cade. Damon avoids Hell and Stefan makes the ultimate sacrifice for love. Not just for Caroline but for Damon too.
Eternity May Be Sooner Than You Think
The episode ends with Damon sitting at a bar alone. Suddenly he is shot from behind. He turns around and sees Matt with a gun. Wooden bullets of course. Damon isn’t really surprised but when he is shot again… by Ric, his best friend, he is stunned. Damon tries to explain but Ric stakes him! The scene fades out with Damon dying! Petrifying and everything! OMG!
Oh wow! It’s more than likely that Cade will bring Damon back to life, but what if he doesn’t?! What if this is it for him? TVD writers, please, please, please don’t kill Damon off not even half-way through the season! I don’t think my heart could take it. I’m still having a hard time coping with season 8 being the last one. That would be Hell!
