After Stefan is forced to make a deal with Cade, Damon convinced him to flip his humanity switch. The result? The Ripper is back!
Which is exactly what Cade wanted. And just as Cade had hoped, Stefan has one taste of fresh human blood and the Ripper comes out of retirement. He did try to control it for a little while though he was still being a douche. Alas as we all knew he would, he loses control.
“We Have History Together” Ep. 8
Stefan and Damon attend an anger management support group looking for their next victim. Meanwhile, Sybil uses a group of high school students as leverage to get Caroline to locate a historical artifact that can be used against her; and Stefan and Damon continue their commitment to Cade and test the morals of a young doctor.
Sybil “sirens” an entire classroom of students at the gang’s former highschool. Unbeknownst to Caroline, Sybil arranges to have her sent there for a story about “Founder’s Day”.
According to Sybil there is a “bell” that she needs and if Caroline doesn’t find it for her, well then Sybil is going to murder all of the students. Caroline calls Matt and coincidentally he has just the lead she needs.
Turns out Matt had a relative who was the original founder of Mystic Falls. Not the “Founding Families” everyone was taught to believe. And this person created a bell. A bell imbibed with immense power by a bunch of dead witches who were burned at the stake in 1790. The three parts of the bell are the tuning fork, the iron ball that Damon collected from Matt’s father on behalf of Sybil and the bell. The tuning fork on its own causes the sirens horrendous pain so imagine if the bell was assembled and that sound was magnified a 100 times? A weapon capable of actually killing the Siren Sisters.
Side Note: Remember Bonnie being affected by the tuning fork? Hmmm.
Stefan the Ripper
The Salvatore brothers compel the members of this anger management group, in order to find a person willing to “join the dark side”. They manage to set up a man to admit that if it came down to him or any of the other members, he would want to live. Apparently that’s good enough for Stefan. While Damon takes care of the man with the moral ambiguity, Stefan decides to feast on another member. (Not part of the plan) This pisses Damon off.
Stefan tells him that he is in control this time but there’s no reason they can’t have a little fun. He tells Damon that he thought they would be brothers again, but since Damon isn’t as anxious to maim and murder, well then there must be something wrong.
Damon’s “problem” is that he has Elena’s necklace and it makes him feel good. It also brings out glimmers of her from his subconscious. His returning feelings mean his humanity could come flooding back and neither Sybil nor Stefan want that.
Partly because Stefan can’t help himself and also because he wants to test his brother, Stefan chooses a young doctor with a sad past as their next soul. Stefan compels the doctor to believe that the drunk driver who killed her parents is Damon. Damon is hooked up on a vervain drip and weaker than a puppy. He does try to convince her that she doesn’t have to do this etc… but Stefan continues to weaken her resolve. This otherwise good woman, kills Damon.
Stefan, now in the car with a revived Damon goads him in to throwing Elena’s necklace away and then insists he has to be the one to kill the doctor.
The next morning, Damon returns to the spot where he tossed the necklace and Stefan returns to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Matt and his father save the kids and Caroline and Sybil head over to Caroline’s house to look for the bell. Once they arrive, they find a note addressed to Sybil. Looks like her sister beat her to the punch.
Once Caroline hears from Matt that the students are safe she turns to attack Sybil. Sybil stops her by using the twins against her. First she tells her that she may or may not have put a kill switch in their tiny heads. Then she gloats about Stefan returning to his ripper ways. How can Caroline be sure that when they are married blah blah (Sybil does talk a lot) that Stefan wont flip and kill her children?
Stefan Loses Control
Well who didn’t see that coming? Damon returns to the hospital and finds his brother feeding amidst the carnage of his frenzy. Oh yes, the Ripper has returned! The severed heads are proof of that.
“The Simple Intimacy of the Near Touch” Ep. 9
Stefan and Damon (no mention of Stefan’s hospital ripper feast?) return to Mystic Falls at Sybil’s request as she still searches for the historical artifact. Bonnie returns from Paris wearing a vile of Enzo’s blood, which makes Caroline wonder if Bonnie will become a vampire. Stefan, Damon, Caroline, Bonnie and Enzo all attend the Miss Mystic Falls pageant and Sybil taunts Damon with memories of Elena.
Ah so much nostalgia in one episode. I really need to re-watch the series again *sigh.
Bon Jour Bonnie
Bonnie surprises Caroline upon her return from her romantic trip to Paris with Enzo. She’s wearing quite the trinket too. A pendant filled with Enzo’s blood. She assures Bonnie that it is just an immortal token of his love, a symbol. She also brought gifts for Caroline (a dress?) but tells Caroline not to open them yet as they are wedding related.
Somehow, Caroline is expected to host the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant when what everyone really wants to do is assemble the bell that can rid them all of Sybil.
Despite the cops being sirened to kill anyone looking for the bell, Matt manages to procure it. With Bonnie home, they now have the bell and the fork. Only the clapper (iron ball) that Damon has been holding on to remains to be found.
Miss Mystic Falls
The Salvatore brothers return to Mystic Falls just in time for the pageant. As you all will remember, the pageant was a turning point for Stefan, Damon, and Elena. While Stefan was trying his hardest not to kill a young girl, Damon attends the pageant in his place so Elena has a dancing partner. Sadly for Stefan, this is where Damon falls for Elena and Elena starts to see Damon in a different light. Basically the beginning of the end for Stelena.
Of course Sybil is there too and Caroline is just trying to keep everyone safe. The boys arrive and the fun begins.
Damon is besieged by memories of Elena and he is now able to say no to Sybil. She is shocked. Damon asks Caroline about the necklace, and she explains that Elena is the best part of him and that he needs to hold on to that. They continue their conversation during the traditional dance.
Sybil cuts in and tries to manipulate Damon. Telling him it’s easier if he just allows himself to forget. If his humanity comes back he will be forced to deal with the guilt of everything he’s done including the murder of Tyler Lockwood. She convinces him to give her the clapper. They both go upstairs to retrieve it.
Bonnie and Enzo, more in love than ever are also on the dance floor. Caroline’s reaction to Enzo’s gift has her questioning his motive behind it. He admits that part of it was his desire for her to become a vampire as well. She tells him that she always hated the idea until she fell in love with one. She reminds him that her life is tied to Elena’s so even if she wanted to (she says that she would for him) she can’t. Then she flips it around on him. She asks him if he would take the cure and become human for her? Wow! Lot’s of hesitation on his part.
I predict, Bonnie will become a vamp against her will, essentially dying so that Elena can wake up. The loophole that Kai swore didn’t exist.
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Sybil follows Damon upstairs and just as she thinks he is about to hand over the clapper, he crushes her skull with it instead. Before he can give it to Caroline, Stefan stakes him, killing him temporarily.
Downstairs Caroline has told all of the guests that the party is over due to a gas leak. The pageant contestants stand before her and ask her “who’s won?” Stefan appears and breaks one of the girls’ necks. She manages to stake him before he can kill the rest of the girls. The girls tell her that they have all consumed vampire blood. She gets them out of the house before Stefan wakes up.
Now that the two of them are alone, Stefan wakes up. Caroline says she’s had enough and they are going to spend this year TOGETHER. Try to find a way out of Cade’s deal together and they will stick to collecting evil souls. Not surprisingly, Stefan informs her that it won’t be a year because he likes it. He likes being a ripper. It won’t be over until he decides it is over. Ouch! That hurts! So Caroline throws her ring at him and tells him to stay away from her until then.
How it All Ends
Damon has Sybil locked up in a cellar and informs her that he will be torturing her for who knows how long. Reminds her of what she looks like when she doesn’t feed. In return, Sybil gives him back all of his memories and violently flips his humanity back on.
Yikes! That’s going to be one hell of a hangover. Stay tuned for more of Stefan the ripper. God, now he’s unsupervised.
