In episode 10, “Nostalgia’s a Bitch” we take a walk down memory lane, inside Damon’s head.
Yep, inside Damon’s head. You see, after Sybil’s latest attack, Damon had his humanity forced on him and it put him in a catatonic state. In “Nostalgia’s a Bitch” we delve deep in to Damon’s scarred psyche and reunite with some long-dead characters.
“Nostalgia’s a Bitch”
The episode starts with Caroline moping in bed after calling off her engagement (again). Bonnie arrives at the Salvatore mansion to pull her out of her funk but instead finds Damon. Sitting in a chair completely unresponsive, Damon resists all attempts by the girls to snap him out of it. After determining that he has locked his subconscious in a fiery, painful Hell, Bonnie and Caroline do the only thing they can do… release Sybil from her cage.
Sybil tells the girls she will try to fix him BUT she wants the bell. Caroline begs Matt to bring her the bell though Matt is vehemently against it.
Surprise! When Sybil tries to go in to Damon’s head, she is locked out. She tells the girls that they will have to enter the “back door” and try to find him.
The Mystic Grill?
What they find is very surprising. Apparently, Damon has created a world where he was never turned into a vampire. Therefore, all of his horrible ‘transgressions’ as a vamp have never happened. Bonnie and Caroline walk into the Mystic Grill and Vicki is not only alive, but has never heard of Damon or vampires. Even more disturbing? Caroline’s mother is still alive and investigating “animal attacks”. Sherif Forbes also claims to have never heard of Damon (Only Stefan) and immediately recognizes Caroline for a vamp. A shocked Caroline is carted away by her mother in handcuffs.
Sherif Forbes ties Caroline to a chair in a windowed room. As she questions her daughter, she opens the blinds letting the sun burn Caroline but she doesn’t budge. She sticks to her story and informs her mother that not only does Damon exist but he is Liz’s best friend. The only one who truly knew her suffering when she was dying of cancer. After this revelation, Caroline is released and kicked out of Damon’s head.
Forgiveness is the Key
Bonnie figures out that forgiveness is what Damon needs. He desperately needs to be forgiven by those he has wronged the most. Bonnie never did forgive Damon for his cowardly “Dear John” letter when he locked himself up in a coffin for 3 years.
Bonnie goes to her childhood home and her Grams opens the door. She was counting on this because she needs a locator spell. It is very touching to see them together again *sniff. I guess nostalgia’s a good thing too. Anyway, Grams does the spell and locates the letter that Bonnie never read. She brings the letter to the Salvatore crypt and tells Damon she forgives him. However, nothing happens and Bonnie is bumped out of his head too.
Stefan is the One
While Bonnie and Caroline are doing their walk-about, Matt and his father have returned the bell to Mystic Falls as requested. Seline shows up and explains to them what will happen when they ring the bell (and it has to be Matt or his father). If one of them rings the bell 11 times, a portal to Hell will be opened claiming the Siren Sisters. The problem is that it also unleashes torrential Hell fire that will destroy Mystic Falls and its inhabitants.
Around this time, Stefan shows up and tells them he will be needing the bell destroyed because Cade wants Damon back to work. He learns about his brother’s catatonia and listens to Seline’s offer of an alternative. He compels Matt to ring the bell at 9 PM unless Damon is brought back.
Matt explains to his father that he will most likely have to kill his son to stop the town from being destroyed. Naturally Peter is skeptical and also tells Matt that he won’t be able to do that.
Now it is Stefan’s turn. He jumps right in to Damon’s head and finds himself in the woods. Damon is waiting for him. Stefan offer his forgiveness (not so convincingly) and Damon tells him that he is not looking for forgiveness. He then goes on to tell Stefan that he loves him and FORGIVES him for turning Damon in to a vampire against his will. If not for that, Damon wouldn’t have done the things he’s done. Stefan is incredulous and tries to fight his brother, noting that he is physically being injured even though none of this is real. Stefan get bumped from Damon’s head.
Now Damon is in the family crypt and Tyler appears. He tells Damon that no one will forgive him for Tyler’s murder and Damon acknowledges that he is ready to live with that.
Damon awakens from his self-induced prison and immediately seeks out Bonnie. He finds her out front and recites his entire letter to her. (Oh God! So many feels!) The letter is beautiful and of course she forgives him.
In the Nick of Time
Just as Matt is about to ring the bell for the last time, Damon shows up and knocks him out cold. When Matt wakes up, Damon apologizes to Matt for killing Vicki and says he will spend the rest of his life trying to make it up to him. Matt tells him that’s not good enough but says it’s a start.
“Nostalgia’s a Bitch” ends with Sybil and Seline eating in a diner. They talk about forgiving each other when Cade walks in. (WTF???) He explains to them that the bell rang enough times for him to come through the portal just before he sets them both aflame.
Yay! Damon is back, the Sirens are finally dead BUT Stefan is still evil and Caroline is crushed. Oh and it has been confirmed… Nina Debrov will be back for the series finale! Will Damon and Elena get their happy ending? What about everyone else?
