In “The Next Time I Hurt Somebody, It Could Be You”, Stefan and Caroline’s magical Christmas Eve is spoiled by some uninvited guests.
He’s Alive!!! As I had predicted (Prayed), Damon was killed BUT revived by his new employer Cade. Can’t have his new employees laying down on the job. If you’ll recall, Stefan’s condition with Cade, allowed for 24 hrs of freedom before he starts his eternity as a soul reaper. Naturally he wants to spend it with Caroline. He plans a lovely Christmas Eve party that Caroline initially wanted to have… well… before homicidal Sirens arrived on the scene.
“‘T’was the Night Before Christmas…”
Caroline is thrilled with Stefan. Their party is the perfect setting for her last day with both Stefan and her twins, as Rick is planning on taking them away for a while. Unfortunately, just as the festivities are about to kick off, Damon (Happy dance!!!) and Sybil show up. Ever the unflappable hostess, Caroline “welcomes” them and invites them to join them for a festive drink. Stefan hustles the twins upstairs to join their father. Damon let’s them know that Rick and Matt killed him. Damon asks Stefan to join him upstairs where he says there are old tree ornaments. Caroline is left alone with Sybil. (Awkward)
Caroline leaves Sybil to marvel over the tree and goes into the kitchen to phone Bonnie. Enzo and Bonnie are in bed, again (Enzo has just surprised her with a trip to Paris) and Caroline gives them a run-down of the situation. Caroline fears for her twins who keep asking for Seline. They need the Hell-forged tuning fork to keep everyone safe. Caroline believes she can find out where the Sirens are living. She pours extra bourbon into Sybil’s egg nog hoping to loosen her tongue.
Stefan follows him upstairs and Damon explains that he was in fact murdered, however thanks to their arrangement with Cade, they cannot stay dead. He tells Stefan that their new Boss would like to chat with him. He stakes him with a wooden star, killing him. Stefan is instantly sent to Cade. Stefan crack’s “So my livingroom is Hell?” but Cade explains they are just behind the veil, in between. He plays “Ghost of Christmas Past” and brings Stefan back to a point in his “Ripper” days. The day Cade decided that he had to have him and Seline started to question her role.
Ripper Stefan had murdered an entire work camp where he was staying but doesn’t remember doing it. He learns quickly that it was Seline who helped remove his horrific memory. She is there to claim Stefan’s soul for her Master, but when she searches his mind, she finds that despite the most horrific crimes, there is nothing but anguish in his soul. Right there, Seline decides she doesn’t want to be the one “to decide” anymore, and leaves Stefan alive. She also gives his subconscious a nudge so he will forget the work camp massacre, enabling Stefan to continue his life in a new direction. He becomes the redeemer we know and love.
Will You Carve?
Caroline is in the kitchen with Sybil who is now drinking wine to wash down her nog. She is very chatty. Caroline tries to make conversation, steering it towards Sybil’s home. Sybil brags about her fancy neighbourhood. She sees that Caroline is struggling with the turkey so offers to “carve.” Seeing as that she is a cannibalizing monster, she rips the turkey apart with her bare hands in seconds. Sybil leaves to join Damon and Caroline quickly calls Bonnie to give her the location.
Seeing that Damon has returned downstairs without Stefan, Caroline rushes upstairs to find him dead on the floor. She freaks out but Damon immobilizes her and explains that he’s only dead for now. They both return to the party in time for Matt to arrive with his father.
Everyone convenes in the livingroom. Matt freaks when he sees Damon, and Caroline diffuses the tension with gifts for everyone. She gives Damon a very special gift. she tells him “this gift is for the Damon who will be begging me for my forgiveness, future Damon.” He pockets the tiny package without looking at it.
“Here We Go Wassailing…”
Bonnie and Enzo locate the house that Seline and Sybil have been residing in. Of course a family already lives there but they have been sirened into compliance. After complaining about being sold out by her own sister and how she is trying to redeem herself, she agrees to give them the tuning fork. But there’s a catch, she needs to see the twins. According to her, she started laying a foundation with them and they are now psychically linked. If she doesn’t undo it, it will only get worse, hence, their constant request for Seline. Bonnie calls Ric and passes the phone to Seline. He basically tells her to drop dead and hangs up. In an act of faith, Seline gives them the fork anyway and urges them to explain everything to Ric. They agree and leave.
Dinner is Served
You think you’ve had some tense holiday meals? Everyone minus Stefan, Alaric and the twins, sit down to dinner. Damon decides to drop a bomb right away. He tells everyone that he has another reason for joining them on Christmas Eve. He is there to kill someone! It’s no big secret that Damon has daddy issues… and mommy issues. Basically Damon has issues. He has selected Matt’s dead-beat dad as his victim and launches into his whole “What is the worst thing you’ve ever done?” speech. Mr. Dead-beat starts rambling about not paying his taxes and his gambling problems. This infuriates Damon who makes Peter admit at knife-point, that the worst thing he’s ever done was abandon his son for absolutely no reason other than he didn’t want to get stuck in Mystic Falls. Wow! Poor Mattie.
Matt and his father leave (alive) and when Matt drops him off, he can’t even look at his father.
Bonnie and Enzo arrive with the tuning fork, and give it a good bash in front of Sybil. She cringes in pain but surprisingly so does Bonnie. Damon and Sybil leave in a hurry. Stefan rejoins the fun and has returned with a new deal. See, Cade wants Stefan to work for him but Cade wants Ripper Stefan. He wants Stefan to tip those questionable souls ever the edge. I guess they’re tastier. Stefan agrees to flip his humanity switch for one year. After which, Cade must free Stefan and Damon. Cade wants this so bad and is confident that once Stefan flips his switch, he won’t want to stop, that he agrees.
Stefan tells Caroline he has 7 minutes left of Christmas Eve and doesn’t want to use it telling her the good/bad news. Instead he kisses her under the mistletoe and tells her he loves her.
While Stefan and Caroline are doing their thing, Ric listens to the message from Seline regarding his kids. Because he love them, he agrees to meet with Seline. Seline removes the psychic link between her and the twins. Ric brings them home to open presents with their mother.
Speaking of Presents
Damon and Sybil are strolling down the street. Sybil tells him, “Something is happening here” referring to some twisted chemistry between the two. She reaches into his pocket and pulls out the little red bag Caroline gave him. She opens it and exclaims “It’s beautiful!” Damon looks in the box and sees Elena’s necklace. He has a flashback of himself putting it around Elena’s neck tenderly (a memory Sybil hasn’t touched).
Sybil looks up at Damon expectantly so he puts it on her. She leans in to be kissed and… HE RIPS HER HEART OUT! (cartwheels)
This very festive Christmas episode ends with Stefan walking down the road wearing a backpack. Damon pulls up behind him and he tells his brother to hop in. When Stefan remarks about his missing passenger, Damon just says, “Three is a crowd.” Stefan gets into the car. Damon jokes about the Salvatore brothers together again and back on the road. He tells Stefan that everything would be so much easier if he just turned off his humanity (Damon doesn’t know about the new deal). The camera pans in on Stefan’s sad face…he closes his eyes… and when he opens them again, he smiles evilly.
OMG!!! Totally unexpected twist! What an amazing episode. Make sure you keep reading Rants & Raves for more TVD goodness!
