I know I promised to keep tabs on The Vampire Diaries for you all, but what I didn’t factor in, was how emotionally invested I am. Or how hard it would be to cover the show as it comes to an end.
It’s true! There was only one other show that I was this attached to and that was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I dare say, I may be having an even harder time coping with this impending conclusion. I have been hoarding episodes like an addict, unable to watch them the day they air, while simultaneously bingeing on a handful of episodes later. As if that will keep the end away. I have even started watching the entire series again on Netflix (just finishing up season 2).
However, as of today, I am all caught up and only have the series finale left. Just like everyone else. It’s rare to dread a Friday but I do. As surely as I normally dread Monday mornings, though this is much, much worse.
What to Expect from the Finale
Well, we know Nina Dobrev is making an appearance as it has been confirmed but I think we all assumed it would be as Elena. Now, it seems she could be coming back not as Elena for a romantic reunion, but as the dreaded Katherine. Damon says so himself, she’s the one that started it all so it only seems fitting that she finish it. That is a twist I don’t think fans were counting on.
And Katherine has returned, if in name only. Apparently after Cade was finally killed, it is wily Kat who takes over Hell and she is set on wiping Mystic Falls and its inhabitants right off the map. The ultimate revenge. Personally, I think this was a brilliant move. It makes it possible for Bonnie to have a happy ending. But, at this point is it even possible for her?
Of all the characters on TVD, no one is more deserving of something wonderful at the end. She has always been the most selfless character on the show–always risking her life, happiness, morals, and even her loved ones to help her friends. And yet, has anyone lost as much as she? Her Grams, father, Jeremy (yes he came back only to leave later), even her magic, have all been taken from her. Then, just as she seems to be getting her happily ever after… Stefan rips Enzo’s heart out! (Mine too!) Wow! That was brutal! Part of me says screw Elena! Bonnie, you go ahead and keep Damon for yourself. Poor Bonnie. I hope a miracle happens for you on Friday.
Speaking of Happy Endings
After so much on again, off again drama, a now human Stefan and Caroline finally get married. Yes it was supposed to be bait to lure Katherine in, but in the end, they did exchange vows. Damon even officiated the ceremony. How adorable was that? Of course, they have the eternal hellfires to deal with instead of their honeymoon but I have no doubts that Caroline, the little twins and Stefan will have a normal human lifespan to look forward to at the end of the finale.
So where does that leave Ric? Another guy who has lost so much and yet given so much of himself. Think about it, every woman he has ever loved has died. Well, except for Caroline but that didn’t work out so well for him did it? Thankfully, he has his children and now a dream of opening a school for people with special gifts. Shhh, nobody tell him that Professor Xavier did that already.
And then there is Matt. Poor, lonely and still incredibly human Matt. Life has always stomped on him and most recently, to have his family reunite only to do Katherine’s bidding? Wow! I guess Matt will be happy if everyone leaves Mystic Falls forever. Where he can act as sheriff to a completely human town.
Damon and Elena
As Damon tells his brother, he will have his happy ending with Elena. A human life either now or 60 years down the road (After Bonnie dies) with his true love. The one thing that makes him want to be a better man. Of all the things that could happen during the series finale, we can be sure Elena and Damon will end up together.
This was emotionally exhausting to write so if you’ll excuse me, I am going to continue watching TVD on Netflix. It is the only thing that provides comfort while waiting for everything to come crashing down during the end of one of my favourite TV shows…EVER!
