Book dads. With Father’s Day fast approaching, Booknista takes a fun look at two very different kinds of book dads.
Here’s our dad classification system.
Sexy: This is usually the hero in the book. He’s hot. He’s alpha like and smoldering. This could be your husband, or future baby daddy. It’s definitely not anything like your own dad. Not. At. All.
Satan: He’s pure evil. Like the worst kind of dad ever. He may actually love his own kids and hate on everyone else, or he may be terrible to his spawn, too. We love these characters, they add excitement and villainous intrigue to the story. In this case, lets say it’s ok to hate the player but LOVE game.
Sexy Dad: Rush Finlay
Rush is the cocky son of a rock legend. Blaire is a small town girl and wait for it… his step sister. Uh oh. In the first book of this series, Fallen Too Far, they meet. Its a bit ugly, they’re both surprised to know they each exist. But, you guessed it. They fall in love. And, by this third book he’s about to be a baby daddy. It’s a complicated relationship, but it doesn’t dampen his sexiness. Not. One. Bit. My review here.
Sexy Dad: Jericho Barrons
Well. He’s so not a dad like character, he’s just THAT hot. This is one guy who would never be caught dead (pun intended…keep reading) wearing plaid shorts or driving the car pool to swim practice. Jericho and his beautiful band of brothers are immortal. I read all of these books multiple times and am still dying to know what kind of crazy ass creatures they guys are. They have a curse, they are men and also beasts. They can’t be killed. When they do “die” they come right back. So, imagine if you wanted to torture one of them, it could go on forever. That’s what happens to Barrons’ poor mysterious son. He’s tortured so much that he stays in his beast mode in utter agony. I won’t spoil how it’s finally handled. Read these from the beginning and bask in the glow of this book boyfriend.
Sexy Dad: Lucas Hunter
We first meet Lucas in Slave to Sensation and he becomes a dad in Kiss of Snow, a later book in this series. Lucas is a changeling, not just any changeling, but the Alpha of the DarkRiver pack. He falls for Sascha Duncan who is Psy. Psy people are all connected to one big web like community. They depend on each other, like a giant universe of millions of stars. And, they’re silent. Not in the quiet non talkative way, but in the show absolutely no emotion way. Lucas is the complete opposite. Very touchy feely, needs contact and incredibly sensual. Its the leopard in him. He’s the kind of guy you don’t mind rubbing against your leg. Or anywhere else.
Satan Dad: The King of Adarlan
He’s not going to win dad of the year by a long shot. The King is tyrannical and is raising an army of wicked creepy creatures to conquer every land. He’s actually breeding magical animals and gathering blood thirsty witches to ride them into battle. While magic is outlawed, the King uses it. He’s got some dark magic under his control and manipulates others to do his bidding. His son is the opposite. Charming, good hearted and with some of his own special magic. I hated the King. He’s the perfect villain. Great fantasy series. My review here.
Satan Dad: Cat Crawford’s Dad
Cat’s dad was a baby vampire when he raped her mom and from that Cat was conceived. Bad way to start. Cat finds out much later in life and the knowledge causes Cat to hunt for vampires every night as soon as she’s old enough to head out and get with it. She really, really, hates vamps. Until she finds Bones. It’s a lesson for everyone, don’t judge an entire group of people…or immortal beings…by the wrong doings of one.
Satan (lite) Dad: Joshua Merit
Joshua is the dad of heroine, Caroline Merit. She just goes by “Merit”.” He’s a hard core businessman, major real estate developer and…offered to pay a vampire to make his daughter a vampire. That’s not nice parenting. But, there’s a “lite” added as it at times he shows some touches of humanity. The silver lining is, the vampire he solicited is Ethan Sullivan and through a crazy twist of fate, Merit actually does become a vampire by him. But, not because her dad made it happen. And, Ethan and Merit start off hating each, its tense but they have a simmering building attraction. This has always been one of my favorite series. Makes me wish I was a vampire in Chicago. Their world is very exciting and they’re all pretty damn attractive.
Sexy Dad: Reaver
Reaver is a character throughout the fabulous Lords of Deliverance series. Turns out, he’s also the dad of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Even those guys need a dad. All of these books are snarky, full of action, steamy, dark and filled with emotion. There’s a lot going on in these, with multiple storylines and characters that return and entertain in each book. It’s a fun twist that he’s the father of Pestilence, War, Death and Famine. They’re all grown up and they really aren’t into their dad anymore. It’s a bit of a shock to learn who he is, as they’ve known him for years. Now BAM…who’s their father? A guy who looks about their own age.
Satan Dad: Roland
What if your dad can control the undead and tried to kill you before you were born? Ouch. Meet Roland. Evil dad to Kate Daniels. This series is set in Atlanta where magic and technology are at odds and the vampires aren’t all pretty and sparkly. Vampires are ugly creatures that are controlled by necromancers who are motivated by power and money. Kate is a trained killer with intense magic running through her veins. This series has the evil dad, a beast lord, witches, warlocks, mages and lots of action.
Who’s your top book dad? Sexy, satan…or maybe the more supportive type like Charlie Swan from Twilight?
