Spanish Lessons by Jessica Peterson was a super pleasant sweet surprise NA book! The story is, Viv a college student, is studying abroad in Madrid for a semester.
Let’s start there. I was in Madrid a few years ago and LOVED it. Immediately I was excited to read this NA book. I did not have nearly the rockin’ hot sexy times as our friend, Viv. I did, however, fall in love with the city, art museums, tapas, wine and people watching.
On to Viv.
She arrives scared and homesick in Madrid. Her host barely speaks English and has a psycho dog. She eventually settles in at her host’s apartment and then heads out to meet some fellow students for drinks, club hopping and late night fun.
And now on to Rafael. My new multi-lingual book boyfriend. He likes to be called Rafa.
Rafa is beautiful. He is charming. He is a god on the dance floor. He’s the cousin of one of her classmates and is immediately interested in Viv. As a reader, I know this. I’ve seen this before. Viv, however, is oblivious. She doesn’t believe he’s into her. They chat all night, they dance, they joke, they drink, they stay out to 6am! He’s perfect. Really, we should all just move to Madrid to find our own Madrileño.
I turn to face Rafa, hooking my finger in the v of his shirt. It’s as satisfying as I imagined it would be. Singing Lil’ Jon’s incredibly explicit lyrics, I pull Rafa toward me, my hips working double time. His follow suit, and when we meet it’s like a (sexy) bomb goes off. He smiles, a devastating flash of lips and teeth and eyes. I unravel in his arms, allowing sensation to take over.
He’s smiling and I’m smiling and as we move faster and harder, it feels like we’re the only people in the room. We dance like this to the next song, and the next. They keep getting better. We keep getting better.
His hand brushes my breast as he sets his drink aside. “Sorry!” he shouts.
I grin. “No you’re not.”
Viv has absolutely THE most amazing night.
They exchange numbers and Viv waits for his text or call. It. Never. Happens. Meanwhile, Viv’s roommate and BFF from college has arrived and she has her own family drama to deal with while in Spain. Viv starts class and is overwhelmed. She really doesn’t know Spanish well and her major, economics, isn’t her favorite thing. The struggle is real for poor Viv. The director of the study abroad program calls her into her office and presents her with a tutor.
The tutor is Rafa. #Awkward #YetStillHot
They’re clearly attracted to each other. And quickly realize she had accidentally given him the wrong number. But…Viv doesn’t want a relationship. She wants to do well in school, get in and out of Spain unscathed by sexy a Madrileño. This is where I am screaming to Viv…WTF?! Really, live it up girl. File those organized responsible tendencies somewhere else for a few months.
You get the picture. The have an insane chemistry, but she’s holding out. And, the roommate with the family drama also likes Raphael. Soooo…there’s that.
There was so much I liked about this book. Seeing Spain again. Swoon worthy Rafa. And I enjoyed the fun snarky group of young women Viv hangs out with. I feel like I need new friends when I read books like this. Maybe not a whole new set, but an upgrade here and there.
I can’t wait for the second book in this new series. I give this NA book an A. I’m officially a fan of Jessica Peterson. You will be, too! A few special things for you…
Check out this excerpt. It’s AMAZING.
Because I LOVED my time in Spain, I asked Jessica to talk about Madrid and why she chose that setting. Read all about it.
