Abby O’Shea has a pretty cool job. In the world of bookish careers and start ups, she’s launched her own subscription romance book service. And, after browsing her blog and doing this interview, I can also tell you she has GREAT taste when it comes to reading.
First, in just 2 sentences describe your company, Romance Reveal Book Box. What’s the elevator pitch?
Romance Reveal Book Box is a monthly subscription service that delivers signed paperbacks, book swag, an author-inspired adult coloring card, girly product samples, and a small treat right to your door! We help readers discover new books and authors to love, as well as add to their signed book collections.
Your partner is a non romance fan and guy…Brandon. What’s that like working with someone who isn’t a fan?
It’s pretty funny, actually! He doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with the author/reader side of the business, but I do enjoy his reaction to some of the covers and titles!
What made you think to start Romance Reveal Book Box?
The subscription aspect was all Brandon’s idea. As a blogger, I was always looking for unique and exciting ways to help promote the authors I love, especially the self-published. When he approached me about the idea, I was all over it! I initially contacted a few author friends, blog followers, and publicists in the romance book community to get their thoughts. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive! It was definitely something both readers and authors wanted to participate in.
What has been the hardest thing about your new venture?
Ha! That’s a good question. Probably having to learn to shut myself off from work mode. I have been a stay-at-home mom for over 11 years. Aside from blogging, all of my time had always been devoted to being a mom and wife. The minute we decided to make a go of Reveal, I was a full-time working mom. It has been a big adjustment for all of us, especially once my kids got out of school for the summer! LOL. My family has been wonderfully supportive though, so we’ve done a good job adjusting. My kids even loved to help out in the beginning.
You’re a huge romance book fan, name your top three books of all time.
Well, the name I blog under, Abby O’Shea, is a combination of Abby Abernathy from Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire and Ava O’Shea from the This Man trilogy by Jodi Ellen Malpas. Those are definitely two top favorites! The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller (soon to be renamed Into the Light) by L.B. Simmons is my other favorite. It’s so beautifully written, and has stayed with me for years. Those are the three books I tend to go back and reread whenever I’m in a book funk, or just need to revisit old “friends.”
Surely you have book boyfriends, name them.
Oh, man. There are just so many! Travis Maddox (Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire), Jesse Ward (This Man trilogy by Jodi Ellen Malpas), Colton Donovan (Driven trilogy by K. Bromberg), Edward Cullen (Twilight by Stephenie Meyer), Will Cooper (Slammed by Colleen Hoover), Mal Ericson (Play by Kylie Scott), Rowdy St. James (Rowdy by Jay Crownover), Ryke Meadows & Connor Cobalt (Addictied/Calloway Sisters series by Krista & Becca Ritchie), Randy Ballistic (Pucked Over by Helena Hunting), Grady Bennett (Out of Focus by L.B. Simmons), Jake Wethers (The Storm series by Samantha Towle), Brody Murphy (The Cranberry Inn series by Beth Ehemann, Naz Vitale (Monster in His Eyes by J.M. Darhower)…OMG I could go on for DAYS!
Many readers secretly want to be writers, do you dream of being an author? If so, what would you write?
That’s funny because I know this to be true. However, even if I were one who wanted to write, I don’t have the stories. The best authors are the ones who write because they have to, the ones whose stories are in their heads, and the characters speak to them. The only voices in my head are my own!
It’s road trip time, where are you heading?
All around the country to watch a game at all of the Major League ballparks. We are a huge baseball family! Go Cubs! 😉
I love stupid humor! My favorite movies are comedies like Tommy Boy, Billy Madison, Van Wilder, Bridesmaids, There’s Something About Mary, American Pie, Wedding Crashers, and others like that. I also love Along Came Polly and Friends with Benefits.
Favorite TV series?
Currently, it’s The Blacklist. I also really enjoyed the pilot of This Is Us. I have a feeling that’s going to be a new favorite.
Imagine you’re VERY VERY rich. Pick your dream vacation spot.
That’s an easy one! Barcelona, Spain. I was an Interior Designer before I had kids. Architecture, Drafting, and History of Furniture were a few of my favorite classes in design school. Some of the greatest architecture in the world is there (in my opinion)!
Have you met any of your favorite authors? Who?
I have, actually! Tons of them, really. Gosh, I don’t want to leave anyone out, so I’ll just name 5 random great authors I’ve met: A.L. Jackson, Brittainy C. Cherry, Tara Sivec, Jay Crownover, and Rebecca Shea. I have to give a shout-out Emma Hart and L.B. Simmons too. They have both become great friends, and have been amazingly supportive of me. I love them dearly!
What did you want to be when you grew up? Dream job.
I really only ever wanted to be a mom. I originally studied Elementary Education for three years in college, but decided I didn’t want to be a teacher after working as a T.A. in a preschool. That’s when I went into Interior Design. I loved it, but I never really wanted any sort of career when I was younger. I just couldn’t wait to get married and have babies! ☺
Wine, beer or fancy cocktail?
Never beer. Yuck! I like sweet bubbly wines like moscato d’asti. I also like fruity martinis like cosmos and lemon drops. I don’t really drink very often, but those are what I order when I do!
We’re fangirls, we love reading, stories, all things books. What do you think is missing out there? Is there a genre not explored, a conference not created, what’s the need in the bookish community?
That’s a great question! I have been thinking about this for several months. I have lots of ideas in my head, so I don’t want to put any spoilers out there. I hope that someday in the near future, Romance Reveal Book Box, or maybe Not Your Mama’s Romance (my blog), will be bringing one of those missing elements to the readers!
Name the one book everyone else has read but you. Outlander!
Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business?
Research, research, research! We spent countless hours/days/nights researching. Be as prepared as possible. And find a good partner. Brandon and I have been friends for a very long time, so we trust each other and know each other well. We both bring different qualities and talents to the table. Neither one of us could do this without the other, and I think that’s important.
Thank you so much for featuring me. It has been so much fun, and I love your blog!
XO ~ Abby
