Confession time. I read sexy NA Romance, Beautiful Disaster… and I LOVED it!
OK this may hurt my street cred as a Sci-Fi/ Fantasy aficionado but Beautiful Disaster was amazing! It was sexy, thoughtful, fun and… did I mention sexy?
It also brought me back to a time of first loves and DRAMA! When everything is the end of the world and your first love is all-consuming. All that matters is the other person, lust and passion. Your heart races, your blood boils and you live in a perpetual state of intense feelings.
Jamie McGuire nailed it with this book and I can see why people are crazy about the Beautiful Disaster series.
Abby Abernathy moves away from her home and her past with best friend America. They both start at Eastern University and Abby figures if she changes the way she dresses, keeps her nose in her books and lies about where she’s from, she’ll get her fresh start.
That’s when she meets Travis “Mad Dog” Maddox and all her plans go out the window. Travis is the classic bad boy. Hot, ripped and covered in tattoos, a real ladies’ man. He also has a complicated past and a ton of baggage. See? Classic bad boy.
Abby meets him after seeing him fight in an underground fight club. He is the cousin of America’s boyfriend which is why she is at an illegal fight in the first place.
A pair of heavy black boots stepped in front of me, diverting my attention to the floor. My eyes traveled upwards; jeans spattered with blood, a set of finely chiseled abs, a bare tattooed chest drenched in sweat, and finally a pair of warm, brown eyes. I was shoved from behind, and Travis caught my arm before I fell forward. “Hey back up off her!” Travis frowned, shoving anyone who came near me…”Sorry about that, Pigeon.”
After a series of not so coincidental meetings Abby and Travis form a sort of friendship because she refuses to become another notch in his belt. Travis is bewildered by a woman not wanting him and for the first time is besieged by feelings he has never had before.
What evolves is the most tumultuous, confusing and passionate relationship either of these co-eds have ever experienced. Everyone can see that they have totally fallen for each other but they refuse to let go and see what happens…until they do!
Wow! It’s such a small word but that’s how I felt the entire time reading it!
At first glance it seems like your standard romance novel but as the saying goes, things aren’t always how they appear.
The writing was great! One of the things I hate about your typical “Harlequin” is how shmaltzy they are. With cheesy dialogue and cliché riddled prose, is it any wonder Romance novels get a bad wrap? They become a sneaky vice as opposed to standard fiction you can read openly on the subway. No offense to those that enjoy that sort of thing, but I really dislike it.
Beautiful Disaster is not that kind of romance. It’s a realistic and relatable story that happens to have hot love scenes. Very big difference!
Beautiful Disaster has become a beautiful series of books about the different characters in the first installment as well as stories about each of Travis’ brothers. It is very easy to see why Jamie McGuire has such a devoted following. I myself have already started Walking Disaster, their story from Travis’ point of view.
Maybe because it was a New Adult novel or more likely because Jamie McGuire is a great story-teller, I really loved it.
It was modern, sexy, and refreshingly different. I felt all of the intended emotions. Happy, sad, hot and bothered and even a little nostalgic. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
